In "You Gotta Be", what does Des'ree mean by "read the books your father read"?

Because no matter how independent someone is, they got there because of their parents raising them and everyone takes a little bit of their parents with them as they grow up. It might mean something about trying to figureing out what your parents knew by doing what they did, since the next line of the song is "Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time."
