Recommendations to buy a single-malt Scotch for a 60yr old Father?

He is a fan of blended (like Johnny Walker, Crown Royal, etc) and cognac (Hennessey, Meukow etc). I wanted to get him something different. He hasn't tried any single-malt yet, so what would I get for someone like him? I have given considerations to Lagavulin 16 and Glenmorangie La Santa. Any insight would help, Thank you.
