How can I fly one-way... cheap?

What is the best way to get the cheapest flight? I want to leave next september from either Montreal, Quebec, or Burlingtong Vt, to go to India (Arrival wherever, as long as the flight is cheap), I don't have any specific dates to leave on but i only need a one way ticket because i plan to be in india for at least 6 months to 1 year. Can i just show up at the airport and... wait? ask around? I've been searching websites but it's always way more freaking expensive to get a one way ticket than a return one... any suggestions?
